What I learned from 4CC volunteer

My goals in joining this volunteer activity were to improve my English and listen to many different kinds of Englishes. I am confident to say that not only I accomplished these goals but I also learned many important things from joining this 4CC Figure Skating Volunteer.

One of the most important things that I learned is to be flexible. In international competitions like this, there are many unexpected things that could happen. I learned that I should be open-minded and flexible and should try my best to help. I really admired one of my co-volunteers who became Team Japan’s interpreter. She did extremely well in spite of the fact that she haven’t that much knowledge about figure skating and experiences in interpreting.

I also learned that doing what you are told to do is not enough. In joining volunteer activity, I learned that I should find by myself what I can contribute to the competition. Although our group were quite busy for the first few days, we didn’t have much job to do after the competition began. I tried to be attentive to what’s happening around me and to give a hand to those who need assistance.

Lastly, I realized that English plays a very important role in everyone’s lives. In this competition, it was English that connected me with the Taiwanese volunteers and all people involved in this competition. Without English, I would not be able to communicate with the competitors and coaches from all over the world. So I became more motivated to improve my English after joining this. (I am motivated to learn Chinese as well! :)

I am very thankful to be chosen as one of the 6 volunteers from Japan. I couldn’t have known these important things if I had not joined this 4CC volunteer activity. Because of this, I was able to meet 5 wonderful Japanese volunteers who have taught me lots of things and awesome people from different countries.
